this is the one. fifteen pages of doug sahm items on amazon music, and the real number one album isn't there. so find it. trust me. I was there, paying some attention, in Austin at that time, at soap creek and rome inn and armadillo and all those lost places. this one is after the sir doug california crap and before they started to repackage the songs and the people ad infinitum. it was really like this, stoned and country and funny all at once. chock-full of cultural references if you recognize them, and if you don't it's not important anyway. this, and "jerry jeff walker", the first MCA album from 72 (also oop, another cryin' shame), and "cosmic cowboy souvenir" by michael murphy before he went for the dollars and added a middle name are the first three items in anyone's "progressive country" (forgive the label) collection. these are the records and people we listened to before willie showed up with the big guns and got everyone's attention.
